Why Teaching Leaders?

Teaching Leaders is a powerful initiative to drive substantial and measurable change in complex urban schools. It has been developed in recognition both of the significance of middle leaders in raising standards and changing the life chances of young people, as well as the need for specific support and training for teachers moving into these influential positions. Teaching Leaders is not the only training available for middle leaders but it is differentiated by its focus on complex urban schools, which face a unique set of challenges. It is also different in its emphasis on driving measurable impact on pupil achievement and development, and the weight placed on individually tailored, practical training.

What you will get from the programme:

Social Impact: Through Teaching Leaders you will have the opportunity to really change things and make a difference on a wider educational stage, as well as on an individual year-group, class and pupil level.

Personal Development: The two-year Teaching Leaders programme combines high-quality leadership and management training, delivered by experts, and close individual support and coaching from experienced urban leaders to ensure that you are able to apply what you have learned in your school. The programme team is currently in discussion with the Institute of Education about including the core module from their Masters in Urban Education and Leadership as part of the programme, enabling you to work with leading academics from the field of education. More details to follow...

Career Advancement: Teaching Leaders will take your career and your ability to effect change to a new level - and potentially lay the foundations for a move into senior leadership.

Urban Leader Network: Critically, Teaching Leaders will connect you to a valuable network of peers - ambitious, driven middle leaders who are focused on making the most of their talents to deliver results for the pupils within their schools. Together you will share ideas and insights, evolve new best practice and help to influence the raising of standards, not just in your school but also in schools across London.

International Perspective: The Teaching Leaders programme will also give you the opportunity to broaden your knowledge and experience of education by seeing first-hand how leadership drives pupils' achievements in other school environments. The team is investigating whether some of the school visits could be conducted during a week-long trip to the U.S. or Paris.

What it will enable you to do:

Teaching Leaders has been designed to help you realise your leadership potential - to take you from being an effective teacher to being an inspiring, motivating and influential middle leader. Through Teaching Leaders you will be better able to take charge of your team, drive change and genuinely shape the achievement of your pupils.

Specifically you will develop greater confidence to steer your team, provide a balance of challenge and support, resolve difficulties and tackle underperformance to build and engage team spirit - even behind initiatives and policies for which there may be an initial lack of enthusiasm. You'll learn how to coach and provide feedback that creates engagement rather than dislocation and understand how to motivate your colleagues and overcome inertia and resistance to change.

Teaching Leaders will enable you to become the best kind of leader you can be - and help you to use that leadership to achieve extraordinary things. It will enable and empower you to make a difference.
