Vision

Teaching Leaders’ vision is of a better society: one where life chances are not predetermined by social class, nor shackled by educational disadvantage. In the belief that children’s success at school can be driven not by social background but by the quality and kind of education they receive, we want to strengthen the capacity of those who lead teaching and learning closest to the action on the front line of challenging schools: middle leaders.

Mission

To address educational disadvantage by growing a movement of outstanding middle leaders in challenging schools

'Teaching Leaders has helped me find my voice as an urban middle leader and to make a real difference to the teachers and pupils I’m responsible for in my school. It’s also reaffirmed my commitment to a leadership career within teaching’

Background

Teaching Leaders was developed in partnership with four of the UK's most forward-thinking educational organisations: ARK, the National College, Teach First and Future Leaders.  The programme was launched in 2008 with an inaugural cohort of 30. The pilot was a huge success – with 80% of schools who had a participant in the first cohort nominating participants for the 09 or 2010 cohort as well.

Teaching Leaders now has 300 participants and alumni across 148 schools nationally

·    Of all participants we have recruited onto Teaching Leaders, 90% have stayed in challenging schools.

·    The programme has received strong evaluations – both from external evaluators and the participants themselves.
