Benefits for Schools

“Teaching Leaders has generated a culture of excellence and leadership which surpasses anything else new in the educational landscape” – Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Education

Teaching Leaders is an impact programme that develops outstanding middle leaders to measurably improve student outcomes.

Our values, and what we deliver

1. Transforming student results

Teaching Leaders is an impact programme that can be used as part of the school improvement strategy to leverage middle leadership as a means of improving student outcomes. Participants use Impact-focused Improvement Initiatives to target and transform student underperformance.

  • The departments of the first graduating cohort improved the proportion of pupils getting A* to C from 46% to 62% over the two year period - 1.5 times the rate of the overall school increase - and outperformed the school average by 10% in the final year.
  • Pupils targeted through directed through participants’ improvement initiatives performed even better, achieving a 74% pass rate.

2. Transforming whole departments and year groups sustainably

Teaching Leaders empowers middle leaders to:

  • Confidently implement clear structures for accountability in their teams
  • Embody a culture of continuous self-evaluation and improvement – for their staff and their students
  • Set and achieve an ambitious vision for their area – aligned with the school’s strategy
  • Develop systematic strategies for improving results, ensuring that they are implemented and sustained.
  • Build capacity in the system to gain sustainable improvements.
  • Harness pastoral resource for academic impact
  • Be an effective catalyst for school improvement

We empower middle leaders to deliver training to their staff– and core participants deliver what they have learned through INSETs to their colleagues as part of the programme. Our Leadership Competency Framework (based on the National Standards for middle leaders) gives them a tool to  continuously evaluate their own practice.

“In Sept 2008 I took over a department which was ‘unsatisfactory’ at KS4; in Sept 2010 it was held up as a leading example of best practice in the school.”
Emma Soper – Pearson Prizewinner 2011

3. Raising the quality of teaching in areas of need

We focus on raising the quality of teaching by:

  • Placing emphasis on the craft of teaching within a department. We only take good or outstanding teachers onto the core programme, then deliver frameworks to share their knowledge
  • Training participants in the art of effective lesson observation and feedback to their staff
  • Providing sessions specific to their subject area
  • Encouraging participants to effectively use data to identify underperformance throughout their area of responsibility
  • Enabling participants to effectively address any teaching in their area which does not meet their high standards

“Teaching Leaders has helped transform teaching and learning in my school, leading to excellent GCSE results” – Headteacher, 2009 cohort school

4. Retention and development of your best staff

We are partnered with Teach First and Future Leaders to provide a spine of leadership skills throughout your staff and keep talented teachers and leaders in schools. Core programme participants commit to their schools for the two years that they are on the programme.

  • 70% of the first cohort have been promoted or given additional responsibility since beginning the programme
  • On the core programme, 99% have remained within challenging schools

5. Value for money

You can become a partner school for only £2k per year (to support a core programme participant).

  • All training is delivered outside school hours so there are no cover costs

The cost to a school per day of face-to-face support is only £135 per day (comparable to similar programmes). Every £1000 your school invests in funding a Teaching Leader leverages £3000 of external funding which is also invested in them

6. Link your school to a powerful  national and international network

  • Become part of a national network of forward-thinking and innovative Heads and Principals  - and recruit from our alumni community
  • Provide opportunities for your senior leaders to coach and facilitate
  • We have links with the Obama Administration in the US, and Leading Educators is based on the Teaching Leaders model

80% of existing Partner Headteachers and Principals have elected to remain part of our partner community by nominating candidates for subsequent cohorts.

Two options for becoming a partner school:
